BJC Animal Control to Host Open House Celebration
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Birmingham-Jefferson County (BJC) Animal Control will host an Open House event for all Jefferson County residents and guests on Friday, December 4 from 11:00AM until 1:00PM at 6227 Fifth Avenue North. The event is free for all ages, and attendees will be able to visit the shelter, take pictures with Santa, talk with the staff and meet the many deserving animals available for adoption.
“BJC Animal Control is proud to serve our community, and we would like to invite the public to come out and learn about our many services and programs we offer,” says Steve Smith, the director at BJC Animal Control. “This is also a great time for all of our friends to help us celebrate our 12th anniversary.”
Free hot dogs grilled by BJC’s own Steve Smith, along with other refreshments and drinks will be provided for guests. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the staff veterinarian, the animal control officers and BJC’s new Adoption Coordinator, Phil Doster. Animal rescue groups including Cross My Heart Dog Rescue, Bama Bully Rescue and The Sanctuary will be in attendance as well. BJC’s mobile adoption trailer and capturing equipment will be on display, and shelter tours will be given every half hour. Educational materials including information about animal adoptions, spay and neuter programs and tips for solving common behavior problems will be distributed.
BJC Animal Control offers many services to assist animals and people alike: controlling stray dogs running at large, rescuing injured animals, returning lost pets to their owners and adopting animals into new loving homes. BJC also offers the personal guidance of its staff to assist the public with animal-related issues and concerns, from dealing with wildlife to helping with pet behavior questions.
Since Oct. 1, 1997, BJC Animal Control has operated the Jefferson County impoundment facility under contract with the Jefferson County Commission and the City of Birmingham. BJC’s mission is to actively preserve, protect and enhance the health, safety and comfort of the citizens of Jefferson County by taking violent, injured or at-large animals off the streets to keep the community free from potentially threatening nuisances.
